Well some time ago I wrote about some of the more popular types of scams that involved some strange Nigerian princes and not the h most honest EBay sellers. Let’s continue with this topic a little bit, shall we?
Of course there are a number of scam types out there, but today I would actually concentrate on a very specific one, namely the freelotto.com pop-up. Well lets face it greed makes us gullible. We might be smart, but when there is a large sum of money involved, we become stupid quite fast.
OK I do not think I am not the only one who has had a situation when surfing on the internet suddenly got a pop-up with a topic – Congratulations! Wow I have won something; of course we have all heard stories about certain people who have won something on the internet, why shouldn’t we also be the lucky ones. It is possible to win something on the internet, but for that to happen you actually have to take part in some contest. No one will just give you anything for free because that would actually be quite stupid business idea. But I was young and stupid, and needed the money.. The sum was quite nice – over 1 million dollars. Well at first I actually thought that it is a scam, but when I went to the given homepage I got quite confused because it looked legitimate. So I started to follow the steps necessary to claim the money and then there was the one where I had to supply my credit card information. Thank god I remembered one thing at this point – ask the opinion of other people and then the internet came in handy. One forum and 5 minutes latter I understood that it was all a scam. The ‘’friendly’’ people who offered me the money just wanted me to become a member of the page and receive my monthly payment. Let’s just say I did not do them the favor. It was actually a very valuable experience. So be smart and think everything through before acting. You have to earn the money and it just doesn’t fall from the sky.
P.S If I would have “claimed’’ all the pop-ups during the last ten years my status would be probably close to a billionaire.
